This is an important and charming printed cotton dress that was worn by a female member of the Barnes family from Lancashire, England. The family believed the dress was worn to Queen Victoria's coronation procession in 1837. The dress, however, dates earlier than this and is likely to have been the woman's best dress from about 1825-1830. The dress was no doubt considered special to be worn for such an occasion. This uniform is in very good condition and complete with tunic, jacket and vest. It is the uniform of the Second Regiment New South Wales Volunteer Infantry. It is believed that the fabric was donated by a textile manufacturing firm, possibly from the Hunter Valley, to the Red Cross. They then decide where best to send their donations and parceled it off to Papua New Guinea, to the Australian Army Nurses working there. This blue and white stripped Indian cotton shirt was excavated from under the floorboards on level three of the Hyde Park Barracks, apparently near the staircase during restoration in 1980. The shirt is the only known intact example of the most common garment issued to convicts in their thousands.
