    This avocado green ensemble is a treasured heirloom of the Donaldson Family.  This garment was made for Isabella Donaldson (nee Leaf) to wear to her brother’s wedding in 1890.  The long leg-of-mutton sleeves and straight, full-length A-line skirt are indicative of women’s fashion throughout the 1890’s suggesting that Isabella Donaldson kept well-informed of the latest fashion trends given the dress’ manufacture for a wedding in February of 1890.  This garment is a fine example of the dressmaking ... more

    This 'Empire' style muslin gown and petticoat is one of a number of costumes in the Museum's collection that were worn by the Marsden family, and is believed to have been worn by Ann Marsden (1794 - 1885) to the Government House Ball in 1822. The family believed the dress was worn to Queen Victoria's coronation procession in 1837.     This wedding dress was worn by Bertha Oates for her marriage to Charles Willis, held at  Millthorpe Methodist Church on 31st March, 1909.  The dress reflects contemporary fashion with its pouched bodice, high neckline and trumpet-shaped skirt.     This black silk bodice c1885 was worn by Bessie Rouse (1843-1924,) mistress of Rouse Hill House from her marriage in 1874 to Edwin Stephen Rouse (1849-1931) until her death. The bodice is part of the extensive Rouse Hill House & Farm museum collection - the survivors of several generations of Rouse and Terry family from 1870 until the early 1990s - men's, women's, children's and even dolls' clothes.     This crimson bodice was probably worn by Bessie Rouse as an elegant presentation robe, possibly before she was married to Edwin Stephen Rouse in 1874. Bessie remained the influential mistress of Rouse Hill House from her marriage until 1924. Her outfit does not show extensive signs of wear although Bessie appears to have moved the red glass buttons across 30mm to allow for an expanding waistline.
