  1. Wedding Dress worn by Christina Winifred Howell
    1935

    Port Macquarie Historical Society

This very simple looking dress reflects the bias cut, draped design and cowl neckline made popular in the 1930s by French designer Madeleine Vionnet. The dress was worn by Christina Winifred Nourse, known as Win [1905-1996] for her marriage to Ronald Howell [1910-2005] on 5 September 1935 at Christchurch Cathedral, Newcastle, NSW. During the 1930s and particularly following the Great Depression 1930-1934, women's clothing began to be mass-produced. This outfit is the oldest in Maureen Cooke's extensive private collection, most of which records in detail her career as a fashion designer and seamstress during the 1950s to 1970s. This beach outfit made in 1944 by Maureen at the age of fourteen is all that remains of her earlier work. 4. Dressing gown worn by Mrs Hazel McRae
    1938

    Newcastle Museum

This garment is a charming example of a homemade knitted dressing gown, which, in its colour and fabric is evocative of the interwar period. Although a woollen knitted garment does not immediately call to mind the romance associated with a honeymoon, the flowing lines and vibrancy of the blue Jacquard silk lining perfectly balances practicality (being created between the Great Depression and World War II) and femininity. Hazel was 32 years of age when she married, and her husband 48 ... more

  5. Avocado green silk ensemble
    1890

    Temora Rural Museum

This avocado green ensemble is a treasured heirloom of the Donaldson Family.  This garment was made for Isabella Donaldson (nee Leaf) to wear to her brother’s wedding in 1890.  The long leg-of-mutton sleeves and straight, full-length A-line skirt are indicative of women’s fashion throughout the 1890’s suggesting that Isabella Donaldson kept well-informed of the latest fashion trends given the dress’ manufacture for a wedding in February of 1890.  This garment is a fine example of the dressmaking ... more

    1878 - 1900

    Griffith Pioneer Park Museum

This bustle-style skirt was made and worn in the late 1870s by Ellen Eleanore Sharam, nee Wennerbom.  With its deep flounce and black, beaded braid, the skirt is a fine example of the elegance of the era and the importance of decoration on clothing, even for day wear.
