    This cream silk wedding dress was worn by Giuseppina (Pineta) Bisa for her marriage to Vittorio De Bortoli in 1929 at Bilbul, near Griffith, New South Wales. The dress was purchased from a French catalogue when Giuseppina was working as a maid for a wealthy family in Lyon in France, saving for her fare to Australia. After the wedding, Giuseppina altered the dress so it could be worn for evening occasions. She removed the sleeves and lace fringing, storing these ... more

  2. Diver's suit and equipment

    This dress and apparatus are representative of the traditional diver's equipment in use from the early 1830s until the 1960s. It is also representative of a past era in the history of oyster farming, an industry that is still important to the economy of the New South Wales South Coast. It is unusual to have such a complete set of diver's equipment in relatively good condition and with such strong provenance covering three generations. more

While there the Boer War broke out and on the return journey to Australia the Lancers were ordered to disembark at Cape Town South Africa to take part in the ongoing war.   4. Dress made by Finney Isles & Co. Limited

    This elegant dress with its elaborately decorated bodice and stylish skirt trim was made by Queensland department store, Finney Isles & Co Limited. The store became a limited company in February 1905 which helps to date this garment by its maker's label. The dress was worn by Martha Alice Gilmore (nee Stephen) [d1934]. Martha's husband Thomas Ferdinand Gilmore [1862-1913] was the Manager of Finney Isles Murwillumbah store from its opening in 1904 until his death by self administered poison in 1913. Their daughter Maud Mary [1886-1967] also worked at the store until her marriage to Edward Uptin in 1911. The Murwillumbah store was burnt down during a large fire in the town in 1907 but rebuilt and reopened in 1908. Perhaps this dress was worn at a celebratory function or ball to mark the town's rebuilding. The dress has many features of late Victorian dress, including its corseting and complex hook and eye fastenings to the bodice. The bodice is beautifully decorated with a combination of lace, net, braid, ribbon, tassels and embroidered buttons. These trims are used again on the skirt. The dress has been expertly sewn. All seams are cleanly finished, all linings intact and nothing out of place. This is consistent with a newspaper article describing the Finney Isles women's work room in 1882; "...where numerous girls were sitting at their sewing machines, working swiftly, deftly and noiselessly, except for the click of the needles as the fabrics sped beneath them...".     This dress is an extremely rare and significant example of provenanced early colonial Australian dress. Dating from around 1838, it is believed to have been worn by Julia Johnston, the daughter of Lieutenant George Johnston. This dress is an excellent example of late 1830s fashion with its fitted bodice, dropped leg-o-mutton full sleeve and full skirt.     This garment is a charming example of a homemade knitted dressing gown, which, in its colour and fabric is evocative of the interwar period.     This waistcoat is a provenanced item of men's clothing held by the North Sydney Heritage Centre in its costume and object collection. It is a good example of men's costume.     Little is know of the provenance of this particular garment other than where it was found after the 1955 Maitland Flood, once of the worst natural disasters in Australia in the 20th Century.     This exquisitely constructed christening gown is significant because of its well-documented provenance and connection to the Eddison family, a prominent family of the Woden Valley district, Canberra. Walter Eddison was allocated land occupying most of the Woden Valley as part of the Soldier Settlement Scheme. Unlike many participants of the scheme, Walter made a success of his venture farming sheep, breeding thoroughbred horses and operating a small dairy.     This is the wedding dress of Ellen Mary Bax (nee Drew) when she married Ernest Stephen Bax at the Primitive Methodist church, Mudgee in 1892. A tiny woman, she continued to wear the dress many, many times, most probably as her 'Sunday best'. Made from a strong and expensive fabric, it was very well used.
