  1. Three piece Rundles suit worn by Lawrence Watkins
    1931

    Newcastle Museum

Historic and Social. The social aspect of significance for this suit is twofold. Firstly, it was manufactured by Rundles, an iconic Newcastle business, now in its 180th year of operation. Furthermore, the suit was purchased to be worn to Eisteddfods, which were surely a highlight of a town or city's social calendar, especially during the dark years of the Great Depression. Due to very high levels of Welsh mining migration to Newcastle and the Hunter during the 19th and ... more

  2. Three piece striped silk outfit
    1870 - 1880

Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and Museum

This garment is significant as it is part of 100 piece collection of clothes that belonged to the Bayldon family who were important members of Coffs Harbour society from 1870 to the present day. The Bayldons were a very important family in the history of the Sawtell and Toormina region of New South Wales, just South of Coffs Harbour and this is remembered even today. When the local council established a new housing estate near Sawtell it was called Bayldon ... more

  3. Toddler's smocked dress "Triple Ripple"
    1992

The Embroiderers' Guild of WA Inc

This smocked dress, known as a baby dress bishop top, was based on a pattern by Margaret Herzfeld in the 1990s for the "Australian Smocking and Embroidery" magazine and for smocking lessons. The name 'bishop top' comes from the clerical surplice, a roomy gown with a gathered neckline. It is an easy garment for a child to wear, because it is loose fitting and allowing for growth. Through her teaching and publications, Margaret helped to keep the old skills alive, adapted ... more

  4. Tom Carlton's riding silks
    1915 - 1925

    Dungog Historical Society Inc

These silks are a fine, well-provenanced example of attire worn for competitive horse-riding in the 1920s. They are a vibrant fuschia and bone colour and feature horizontal banded stripes, covered buttons, a high mandarin collar and a draw-string waist. They were worn by Thomas (Tom) Carlton for the high jumping of horses in the Dungog region of New South Wales. Competitive horse high jumping was popular in Australia and much of the developed world in the 1920s and 1930s. In ... more

  5. Topaz Silk Brocade Dress
    1845 - 1850

    Walcha and District Historical Society

It is not possible to find the original wearer or wearers of this dress. It is significant both because of the exceptional quality of the fabric, and its excellent condition despite being at least 150 years old. It is also an example of the large 'bell-shaped' skirts fashionable from 1840-1865. After Miss Jean Crawford died (1892-1978), this garment was donated to the Walcha Historical Society by her niece in Armidale, NSW, in 1979. Jean was born at "Yarooga", Walcha Road, NSW and ... more

  6. Twenties Formal Evening Dress
    1920 - 1930

    Private collectors

Historic and aesthetic. It is a lovely example of a formal garment worn in the 1920's, requiring considerable dressmaking skills to design and complete. It is a very good example of a roaring twenties dress, few of which survive because of the sheerness of the fabric used and the heavy weights of the beads. more

  7. Two-piece Royal blue Silk Gown
    1890 - 1900

    Museum of the Riverina

Historic Significance This gown is known to have been worn by Mrs Basil Bennett at the Murrumbidgee Pastoral & Agricultural Association Show in Wagga Wagga, most probably during the 1890s. It is one of the few pieces of 19th century costume within the Museum's collection which is provenanced to an individual, and associated with a particular local event. It is also unique as a feminine artefact which relates to the social aspect of the Wagga Show, which was often ... more

  8. Two-piece wedding dress worn by Martha Bolton
    1874

    Museum of the Riverina

Historic Significance Martha Devlin's wedding dress provides an indication of the type of wedding dresses worn by regional women of Martha's social standing in 1874. Unfortunately, little is known of Martha herself, with more having been recorded in the historical record about her husband. Alexander Thorley Bolton was a Stock & Station Agent in Forbes, and later Wagga Wagga. He was an Alderman in 1875 and Mayor in 1882 and 1883. Alexander was elected to the State Parliament ... more

  9. Underwear belonging to Edith Lavinia Cameron
    1890 - 1899

    Canberra Museum and Gallery

These under garments, worn by Edith Lavinia Cameron, are of considerable historical signficance because of their connection to one of Canberra's most prominent pastoral families (see Item ID 526) and their rarity. Underwear is poorly represented in museum collections, the extensive wear-and-tear caused by frequent use and laundering meant that garments were often thrown away before they could be collected and preserved. The status of underwear as everyday items of clothing, rather than reserved for special occassion also meant they ... more

  10. Uniform jacket worn by Private Charles Cecil Moss.
    1916 - 1919

    Museum of the Riverina

Charles Cecil 'Charlie' Moss was one of only four young men to enlist from Wallacetown during World War I (Wallacetown is situated in the Wagga LGA, approximately half way between Wagga and Junee). The objects, photographs and paper based material (particularly the handwritten lists of mail received and sent) are very ordinary, yet valuable artefacts of World War I. The brief notations on some of the embroidered cards (and postcards) reveal the youth and optimism of Charlie Moss that he ... more
