  1. Cream two piece outfit
    1890 - 1910

Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery and Museum

This garment is significant as it is part of a 100 piece collection of clothes that belonged to the Bayldon family who were important members of Coffs Harbour society from 1870 to the present day. The Bayldons were a very important family in the history of the Sawtell and Toormina region of New South Wales, just South of Coffs Harbour and this is remembered even today. When the local council established a new housing estate near Sawtell it was called ... more

  2. Small black lace cape
    1895 - 1905

    Private collectors

This cape is of historic significance to Orange. It is hand made from machine and chemical lace. It is in as new condition. Of interest is the fact that the cape has been constructed from one piece of fabric which has been darted and pleated to give it its shape. After Daisy passed away in 1923, the cape was passed into the keeping of Shirley Duckworth's family - both families being friends. It was made for and worn by Daisy ... more

  3. Diver's suit and equipment
    1914 - 1952

Jervis Bay Maritime Museum (formerly Lady Denman Heritage Complex)

This dress and apparatus are representative of the traditional diver's equipment in use from the early 1830s until the 1960s. It is also representative of a past era in the history of oyster farming, an industry that is still important to the economy of the New South Wales South Coast. It is unusual to have such a complete set of diver's equipment in relatively good condition and with such strong provenance covering three generations. more

  5. Man's Chinese informal court robe
    1895

    Australian National Maritime Museum

This man's Chinese informal court robe, acquired by W. H. Stevens of the Victorian Naval Brigade when he was deployed to China during the Boxer Rebellion, is a fine example of a silk kosu tapestry weave robe. Such dragon robes were worn in China from the 17th to 19th centuries, during the Qing dynasty (1644-1912). They were hierarchical garments for male bearers of rank in the Chinese bureaucracy, though were also worn by bridegrooms on their wedding day. Though it ... more

  6. Ted Docker's Wool Suit and Scarf
    1930 - 1940

    Individual

Ted Docker's suit is a fine example of Australian menswear from the 1930s. Ted Docker was a founding member of the Communist Party of Australia, formed in 1920. The suit is said to have been made by the Communist Party of Australia's own tailor, Tim Stillman, a suggestion supported by the fact that the suit is professionally made, yet has no label. The suit was donated to the Powerhouse Museum collections by Ted's son John Docker in 1991. Within the ... more

  7. Dress probably worn by Julia Johnston
    1836 - 1840

    Individual

This dress is an extremely rare and significant example of provenanced early colonial Australian dress. Dating from around 1838, it is believed to have been worn by Julia Johnston, the daughter of Lieutenant George Johnston. This dress is an excellent example of late 1830s fashion with its fitted bodice, dropped leg-o-mutton full sleeve and full skirt. The dress appears to have been professionally made with details of piping and precise embroidery worked on the skirt. Julia was born at Annandale ... more
