Though often overshadowed by fellow swimmer Fanny Durack, Wylie was nevertheless a successful sportswoman in her own right. Wylie and Durack's representation of Australia ... more

  2. Margaret Ewin's wedding dress
    1904

    Millthorpe Golden Memories Museum

This bridal gown was worn for a society wedding which brought together two pioneering families, the Ewins and the Kinghams, from the Millthorpe district. Margaret Ewin was 27 when she married James Kingham on July 27, 1904. They were married by Archdeacon W. King-Howell at St Matthews Anglican Church, Greghamstown. The winter wedding in this region required a warmer fabric, hence the wool challis which would have been expensive. It is stylishly decorated with lace and silk ribbon, with a ... more

One of the oldest continually occupied houses in Australia, Rouse Hill House ... more

  4. Wylie's Baths Swimming Costume
    1900 - 1910

    Randwick District and Historical Society

Standard issue, one-size-fits-all bathing suit hired out to patrons of Wylie's Baths; a garment which demonstrates considerable historical signficance because of its unusual design. In an era when the construction and style of bathing suits was strongly distinguished between men and women, this garment appears to be unisex, with the only part which adjusts according to the shape of the wearer is the drawstring around the neck. The garment nevertheless reflects contemporary concerns with maintaining modesty over mobility whilst bathing; ... more

  6. Estonian child's National Costume
    1939 - 1945

    The Oaks Historical Society

This costume is representative of a traditional Estonian folk dress from Tallinn. It is particularly significant though as it was re-created under extraordinary circumstances: during the second world war by an Estonian inmate of a displaced persons camp in Geislingen, Germany. The intricate method of reconstructing the skirt by sewing repurposed threads onto a backing made out of linen flour bags, as well as using leftover flour bags to alter the shirt, demonstrates how the mentality of 'making do' pervaded ... more

    1868 - 1882

The Cavalcade of History and Fashion Inc.

This day gown was designed with a special bodice that would allow Selina to breast feed her child. As Selina had a total of fifteen children it would have been a very useful garment. The striped taffeta day-gown is dated as C.1868 and is of three pieces the bustle skirt, bodice and bustle. However it also has the additional special bodice with slits for breast feeding that could be worn after the birth of a baby. Selina was the daughter ... more

The shirt is the only known intact example of the most common garment issued to convicts in their thousands. Striped shirts for convicts in Sydney are specifically mentioned in records from 1819, and convicts occupied the Hyde Park Barracks from 1819 - 1848. This shirt is one of the few ... more

    1892

    Quirindi and District Historical Society

This outfit is significant in several categories - historic, aesthetic, social and spiritual: also its rarity and association with prominent Quirindi families. Mary was born at Balmoral, New South Wales on November 24th 1892, ... more
