    Ruth Eason Pontifex Shorthouse and Signalman Charles Joseph Malden Allbon married in St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Chatswood, New South Wales, 5th May 1945. They met during the Second World War when both worked at Railway House in Sydney. When Charles went to New Guinea in 1943, they continued to correspond and became engaged by mail.     This dress is a significant example of a well provenanced stylish dress worn for special occasions by a pioneering woman. This well-made black dress belonged to Hilda Mabel Smith, nee Spencer who was born in Braidwood in 1884. The dress may have been made during a trip to Sydney between 1908 and 1912.     This sleeveless, black silk sheath evening gown, with asymmetrical beading, flared skirt and scalloped hem belonged to Wendy Hucker (nee O’Donnell)’s mother Hylda Maria Sophia Australia Adelskold, and was presumably worn in the 1920s or early 30s. Hylda, born Melbourne, Victoria, 1887, one of seven children.
