It is of great significance and a highly valued object within the Bathurst District Historical Society's collection because of the excellent condition it is in and its distinctive style.     This skirt was made by Sarah Thomas en route to Australia from England in 1838.  Sarah wore this skirt from its date of manufacture until her death in 1878.     Historic Significance Martha Devlin's wedding dress provides an indication of the type of wedding dresses worn by regional women of Martha's social standing in 1874. Unfortunately, little is known of Martha herself, with more having been recorded in the historical record about her husband.     The Edwards family have had a long association with the Dungog region. The garment is of historic significance as it is an every day cotton smock of a boy who was born in 1887 and who died in 1893 from diphtheria.
